El Casco Production Process

Materials
The manufacturing process begins with the selection of the highest quality materials: high resistance wiredrawn wire for the manufacturing of staples, steel bands, calibrated steel bars for the manufacturing of screws and pins, solid brass bars, brass cast profiles and chemical products for galvanisation of the more technologically advanced products.

Manufacturing desk accessories is very diverse; however, the process will be explained using a chrome stapler as an example, to illustrate all the steps and checks involved in the El Casco process:

Stamping and grinding at the El Casco factoryStamping, grinding, drilling and milling

The first step is manufacturing the steel pieces that will comprise the stapler. El Casco uses stamping machines up to 250MT together with progressive dyes that yeild complex pieces without transferring machines, thus providing maximum dimensional precision. Other machinery is used to produce the "head of the stapler" with the most important ones being the dividers, special transfer machines, grinding machines, drilling machines and the milling machines. El Casco is the only manufacturer that grinds all the pieces that will be in contact with the staples in order to get a very smooth stapling action. The result is an almost perfect flat surface in these particular pieces.

The polishing processPolishing

The mechanised pieces are pre-assembled and adjusted individually, reaming the hole where the central pin is to be introduced and drilling the remaining material after this operation. Three pieces of the stapler are assembled at this stage: the frontal "head", the stapler's internal track and external track. After checking for the perfect fit of these pieces, they are disassembled and a laser machine is used to number all three with the same serial number. This serial number will permit rejoining the pieces after a separate process of polishing and plating. In order to get an impeccable surface finish, all the pieces are hand polished. The polishing is done with cams where the polisher glues emery powder of different diameters (from smaller to larger). The operation is repeated up to six times on each piece, achieving what is called 'mirror finish'.

Plating at the El Casco factoryPlating

After the polishing process there is a quality control check for each piece. If there is a defective piece it is returned to the polisher. Now the pieces are ready for the galvanisation process. Each piece is plated with five metals: acid copper, alkaline copper, semi-bright nickel, bright nickel and chrome. It is necessary to brighten some pieces with a cloth cam after copper plating in order to achieve the maximum beauty. The entire process is done in a very modern, automated facility that incorporates water filtration systems as the company is very mindful of protecting the environment.

After the galvanisation process there is another quality control check.

The final assembly of each stapler is done completely by one person. Afterwards it is submitted for quality control tests for functionality and aesthetics. The product is now ready for packaging. To avoid making marks or leaving fingerprints, personnel wear special gloves when placing the desk accessories in their boxes.
