American town offers trophy for best pothole
The local paper in Rochester, Maine is offering readers the chance to have their name engraved on a trophy by finding the most extreme potholes in the town.
Entry to the competition requires drivers to locate and name a troublesome pothole, sinkhole or frost heave in the area.
Some 35,000 Rochester Times readers will be alerted to "a lurking pothole that can butt a head through a sunroof, or a 100-yard stretch of washboard that rattles old bones and shakes teeth loose".
Previous trophy winners include a huge pothole named Jaws because of its penchant for eating tyres and Dover McHole, so named because of its location outside a McDonald's.
Mt Itkillmycaro also caused problems for numerous motorists in the area.
The paper promises to publish every entry received and competitors can give themselves an advantage by submitting "a short tale of woe", a photograph or a poem.
Winters in Maine can be severe, with frost and snow across the state which can gouge out potholes in the roads.
