Australian politicians declare gifts

Visiting politicians are required by protocol to provide gifts to those they come to see and Australian politicians have just released a list detailing what gifts they have been given.

On a visit to Sydney for the Apec summit George Bush presented the then-Australian prime minister John Howard with a golf bag, a custom putter and golf club covers.

The current prime minister Kevin Rudd received a stationary box and pen.

Because they were over the AUS $750 (£345) limit for gifts, Mr Howard was forced to pay the difference in price between the cost of the clubs and the allowance.

He also paid extra for a gift of a set of eight crystal wine glasses from Canada's Conservative Party prime minister Stephen Harper and donated two bottles of dessert wine to an official function.

Mr Howard was forced to surrender a pair of pearl cufflinks in a stingray-skin box for display in the prime minister's Sydney office.
