BBC readers' Olympic mascot designs unveiled

The BBC News website has unveiled its readers' best designs for the mascot of the 2012 Olympic games in London.

Designs ranged from Ben - Big Ben dressed in Union Jack shorts - to Mr Belvedere - whose creator Marc Choi described as "part Dickensian gentleman, part world-class athlete".

Other suggestions included Sock - a sock puppet wrapped in a Union Jack and wearing an Olympic gold medal - and Rustle - a red squirrel.

It has recently been reported that as a result of the controversy surrounding the London 2012 Olympic logo to be printed on corporate gifts last year, the London Olympic Games Organising Committee is considering running a competition to allow members of the public to submit their designs for the mascot.

The mascot of the Great Britain team is a lion.

Branding has been considered to be influential in consumer choices and the government is currently considering banning branding from cigarettes in an attempt to stop young people from smoking.
