'Business gift-giving requires knowledge of international etiquette'
Companies sending business gifts to associates abroad need to be aware of international gift-giving etiquette.
In some countries, giving a gift is polite whereas in other areas they can be seen as a bribe.
According to the BusinessMailing blog, it is bad taste to offer a gift to the wife of an Arab client or colleague.
Bosses should also avoid gifts of alcohol, pork or gifts made of pigskin to members of the Muslim or Jewish faith because these substances are against their religions.
Gifts to a Chinese client should always be a group gift and can have the name of the company engraved on it.
However, clocks are an inappropriate choice because to the Chinese, a clock is a reminder of death. This is because the word "clock" is very similar to the word "death" in the Chinese language.
And BusinessMailing recommends that gifts are not given to those from Latin America at the first meeting.
Similarly, Malaysians will not expect a gift until the establishment of a firm business relationship.
A gift exchange is essential in Japan, the Philippines and Indonesia.
However, gifts to the Japanese should never arrive unannounced and if being given in person, they should be given at the end of a visit to be opened later.
Gifts engraved with a corporate logo are viewed as offensive by those in Spain, Greece and Portugal.
