Charity teens win engraved awards
The Hertfordshire Youth Service Awards were held to celebrate the achievements of 13 to 19-year-olds who have made an outstanding contribution to their communities. County councillor Keith Emstall presented the teenagers with engraved glass avards and certificates praising their efforts.
The councillor, who is executive member for education and culture, said that the 30 prize winners were "inspiring".
"These awards show that we recognise how much they are doing and want to highlight these very special achievements," he added.
One winner was 15-year-old Robyn Alvarez from Waltham Cross who runs activities and organises sessions at her local youth centre. She is now a millennium volunteer and wants to become a youth worker.
Kayleigh Watson from Cheshunt also won an engraved award. She has been a qualified sailing instructor with the Herts Young Mariner Base for two years.
According to the Office For National statistics, in 2005 half of young people aged 16 to 19 performed an informal voluntary activity at least once a month.
