Chinese business workers advised on corporate gifts
Business gifts are often presented to clients after a deal is closed in the corporate world, Chinese executives have been warned.
Chinese portal Alibaba.com has listed a number of guidelines and tips for foreign business workers travelling to America to finalise corporate deals.
The site advised that unless given around Christmas, executive gifts are often immediately unwrapped and shown to everybody as a token of appreciation.
"In many cases, the best gifts are those that come from your country," it stated. "For your business associates, you can give gifts such as useful items for the office, liquor or wine."
However, taking a client out for a meal or another form of entertainment can often prove a popular form of present, the portal added.
Business workers would do well to note, it continued, that personal gifts for female acquaintances such as perfume or clothing would be deemed inappropriate.
This week, a Sydney Morning Herald claimed that small firms can compete with major rivals by adding a thoughtful touch to corporate gifts.
