Corporate gifts are a cheap way to build up a business name
Gifts for clients are a good way to "make an impact" and publicise a business, according to blogger Bob Meyer.
When corporate gifts first began to be widely used in the 1940s and 1950s, items were as famous as today's television advertising, Mr Meyer said.
Promotional gifts are the fastest-growing advertising sector in the US, with American firms spending $8 billion (£4 billion) per year on corporate gifts.
Mr Meyer commented that as a medium, promotional gifts are surpassing billboard expenditure and catching up with magazines.
Items such as luggage tags, business card holders, bottle openers, paper weights and pens are very useful for publishing a company's name.
A study by a southern Methodist university published in the Journal of Services Marketing found that when customers were given a $2 (£1) token or a promotional gift worth $2, those who received an item reordered faster, ordered more frequently and spent more per order.
