Crystal award on offer for best dry stone waller
Yorkshire's dry stone wallers are being invited to enter the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) 2008 Millennium Wall Competition.
An engraved crystal walling "stone" is on offer for the winner.
The competition is aimed at preserving the heritage and tradition of Yorkshire's dry stone walling craft and recognising the achievement of those who are keeping the expertise alive.
Yorkshire regional director of the CLA Dorothy Fairburn said that the competition was a "great opportunity to
ensure the continuation of the craft".
Factors considered when awarding marks include tidiness, impact on landscape, difficulty of terrain and use of the local style.
Current title-holder Stan Bargh won the prize after rebuilding many miles of walling on his sheep farm in the Dales.
The engraved trophy is up for grabs to all stone wallers in the Yorkshire area and the competition is free to enter.
Dry stone walling is a traditional country skill, used for thousands of years to divide farmland.
The Dry Stone Walling Association has 1,200 members in Britain.
