Employee recognition 'vital' in business

Ensuring that employees feel valued is an important part of running a successful business, according to a marketing expert.

Writing in Canadian newspaper the Brampton News, Marcia Barhydt acknowledged that if it was left to employees to decide how their efforts should be recognised they would all opt for a weightier pay packet.

However, that is not practical for most companies and instead many turn to corporate recognition gifts to show their appreciation.

The employee rewards sector is developing into a "huge industry", continued Ms Barhydt, as more businesses look to demonstrate "loyalty to their employees".

She added that almost anything which helps to make an employee happier will be of benefit to the company, explaining: "A happy employee will go that extra mile, take that extra step, make sure with more regularity that every transaction with your customer is done beyond their expectations."

David Bell, human resources director of JCB, recently told the Financial Times that recognising the work of long-serving employees by presenting them with gifts is an important part of the company's culture.
