Employees 'want to be rewarded'

Corporate recognition gifts should come in the shape of a product or an organised event rather than money, employers have been advised.

According to the Register-Guard, although employees want to be awarded for hard work and success, financial rewards often get spent quickly and then there is nothing to show for their efforts.

"With a small company the owners and managers know their employees, their likes and dislikes and can tailor the rewards to the individual employees," it stated. "By doing this the reward becomes much more meaningful."

A good day to distribute corporate recognition gifts is the anniversary of an employee's first day at the company, the publication advised, adding that this is the one date all workers remember.

Selecting an employee of the month to celebrate individual achievements was also recommended as a good business move, along with holding company events such as summer barbecues.

The Financial Times recently reported that there is an increasing trend of workers being given corporate gifts for good work, whereas they were traditionally saved for an employee's retirement.
