Engraved award for best MP website
The British Computer Society (BCS) has presented health minister Alan Johnson with an engraved crystal award for the most accessible MP website.
AbilityNet, a charity helping disabled adults and children to use IT resources by improving and adapting their computing technology, was also involved in promoting the honours.
The 2007 awards were launched to raise awareness of accessibility issues among MPs.
It is hoped that entries to the 2008 awards will show an improvement in the way MPs present their websites, says BCS.
Chief executive of BCS David Clarke said that the 2007 awards were established in order to encourage MPs to "engage all of their constituents, young, old or disabled, in a dynamic and exciting manner through online technology".
Most of those not shortlisted for the awards had missed out because their sites denied access to the disabled, he added.
AbilityNet head of accessibility services Robin Christopherson said that with Britain's aging population MPs "cannot afford to ignore" disability issues. Other MPs shortlisted for the awards included London mayoral candidate Boris Johnson and Celebrity Big Brother participant George Galloway.
