Engraved crystal prize for Northern Ireland's top young musician
A teenage pianist has been rewarded for her "energy and enthusiasm" in performance with an engraved crystal bowl and music vouchers.
Fionnuala Ward won Northern Ireland's Young Musician of the Year competition for what adjudicator Melvin Rickarby described as "the most engrossing and technically perfect performance", according to the BBC.
Ms Ward played Le Chat et la Souris by Aaron Copland.
Runner-up in the competition was 16-year-old alto saxophone player Peter Glasgow from Ballyclare High School whose performance of Gabriel Grovlez's Sarabande et Allegro was, according to Mr Rickarby, "beautifully shaped and fluent, showing both confidence in and enjoyment of the music", reported the news provider .
President of the local rotary club Ken Brundle told the BBC the event "provides a platform for young musicians to gain essential competition experience".
The competition was open to all solo instrumentalists in Northern Ireland aged 12 to 16 and singers aged 12 to 18. It also raised money for a number of local charities, including the NI music therapy trust and the NI Cancer Fund for Children. Since its inception in 1993 it has raised £75,000.
