Engraved gifts for 100-year-old twins

Identical twins from South Africa have been given engraved gifts from the city of Johannesburg for their birthdays.

South African newspaper the Star reports that Dora Uys and Ethel Nembula were given ornate clocks engraved with their name and date of birth for their 100th birthday.

As part of the celebrations, there was a tea and a church service, where local ward counsellor Fadhiel Moosa and regional director of the city of Johannesburg Vusi Mavuso handed over the engraved gifts.

"It is an honour to be in such esteemed company, we can only imagine how much wisdom these ladies have gained over their long lives," said Mr Moosa.

The twins, also known as the "gogos", claimed their secret to a long life is simply "God's will" and said they hoped to still be here in 2010.

In the UK, people who live to the age of 100 traditionally receive a birthday letter from the Queen.
