Engraved vase sells for£64,000
An auctioneer in Wotton in Gloucestershire has sold an engraved vase dating back to 1845 for £64,000.
The vase was originally valued at £2,000 but bidders kept on fighting for the glass piece, once used to store ping-pong balls, according to the Gazette in Gloucestershire.
It was the most expensive lot in the auction room's history.
Spokesperson for the Wotton Auction Rooms Philip Taubenheim told the newspaper that neither the family selling the vase, nor the auctioneers knew the true value of the item.
"It was only when we started to do our research on it we realised that the only other known example of it is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, which suddenly propelled it into a different league," he added.
The engraving on the vase was of a classical battle scene: the victory of Alexander the Great over the Persians.
Mr Taubenheim told the newspaper: "It was in remarkable condition and really shouldn't have survived so well after 160 years."
