Engraving on lost trophy helps reunite it with last owner
An engraved trophy found in a skip has been reunited with its owner, a popular Bolton sportsman.
The Jonah Barrington Trophy was found by a builder clearing out a former gym and sports club building in the city and handed in to local newspaper, the Bolton News.
And it was the engraving that helped local reporters to track down its owner.
The squash trophy was won between 1976 and 1981 by "D.Tobutt" who was quickly recognised as local sportsman and fitness therapist Dougie Tobutt.
When presented with the slightly damaged trophy, Mr Tobutt admitted that he had no idea it was lost.
"I just assumed that the trophy was still being played for each year and that someone else was holding it," he said.
Jonah Barrington was a British-Irish squash player who was, in his day, considered one of the sport's all-time greats, winning the British Open title on six occasions.
