Engraving personal possessions can help prevent theft

Many thefts of laptops from cars, airports and hotel rooms could be prevented by engraving personal information into the machines, according to processor.com.

The engraving could deter thieves and help identify the laptop if it is stolen and subsequently found said marketing director at PC Guardian Jason Roberts.

He also recommends fitting a tamper-resistant asset tag and storing computers in non-descript bag so that thieves do not know a computer is inside.

"Inside jobs" can also be prevented by locking up laptops while at work and thefts from cars can be avoided by locking laptops away in the boot of the vehicle.

Mr Roberts also says that complex passwords will make it harder for amateur computer hacks to get into the system and protect valuable corporate data.

Other goods such as personal stereos and mp3 players can also be engraved with personal information and postcodes to help prevent theft.
