Gift vouchers 'could be phased out'

Paper gift vouchers could soon be phased out in favour of gift cards, it has been claimed.

Gift vouchers are popular with consumers, while many businesses use vouchers for corporate gifts.

However, Natasha Toothill, chair of the Voucher Association, said people are tending to lean towards cards as they offer more choice, noting that vouchers are no longer "as easy to sell to the consumers".

"In the corporate sector, gift vouchers are still more popular than gift cards. That's just because of ease of managing the gift voucher at the moment but that will change, we're pretty positive paper will one day be phased out and be replaced by gift cards," she said.

She added that the "ultimate beauty" of gift cards is the choice they offer, as opposed to an actual product.

"You don't like giving cash, being given a £50 note, it's not the same, you might go spend it in the pub or on groceries."
