'Influential' logos may be banned on cigarettes

The government is convinced about the advertising power of logos on cigarette packets and is considering banning them altogether.

Proposals being discussed by the Department of Health include a ban on cigarette vending machines, removing cigarettes from public display and minimum pack sizes of 20.

Dawn Primarolo, public health minister, commented that "taking away temptation" is one way to prevent children from choosing to smoke.

Research has suggested that advertising and logos encourage existing smokers to continue with the habit and children to start up.

Logos, which can be transferred onto corporate gifts, can have a subconscious effect on behaviour, according to research.

Social psychologist Grianne Fitzsimons from the University of Waterloo has told the Journal of Consumer Research that the perceptions of brands can influence behaviour.

For example, the honesty associated with the Disney brand and the creativity of the Apple brand may make people react in a way appropriate with the corporate logo.
