Irish captain received engraved gifts from Roosevelt
The grandson of a late Irish ship captain has spoken of how proud he is of his ancestor's role in a shipwreck rescue in the Atlantic.
According to the Belfast News Letter, Captain Thomas McDowell co-ordinated an elaborate rescue plan when an American schooner sprung a leak and began to sink.
Celebrating the 100-year anniversary of the event, grandson Tom Kinkhead, from Lisburn, explained how Captain McDowell had a premonition of saving a ship and its crew before it actually happened.
The captain and six crewmen were saved in the operation.
US president Theodore Roosevelt was so impressed with the captain's courageous actions that he presented him with a number of engraved gifts including a gold watch and chain.
In related engraved gifts news, emerging concert pianist Elisha Abas has told the Epoch Times of how past great pianist Arthur Rubinstein gave him a wristwatch for encouragement.
The watch, which Mr Abas wears constantly, is personally etched with words of admiration and support.
