Malaysia 'must create its own brand'

In order to attract tourists and investment, Malaysia must "brand itself to the world", it has been claimed.

Malaysian website the Star reports that the EU-Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman David Jones believes that there is no "brand Malaysia", compared with other countries who can put some of their success down to the perceptions people have of them.

For example, Switzerland may be described as "clean, fresh, modern and progressive," whereas Japan is usually seen as being more focused on "technology, art, fashion and quality products", the Star reports.

According to an article on HRMbusiness.com, branding needs to "differentiate you from your competitors".

Successful branding can make a certain business, or in this case location, the "only" option for consumers, said Karen E Klein writing in Business Week.

Brand can be propagated in many ways, for example on corporate gifts such as pewter tankards or desk accessories.
