Marketing 'even more essential in a recession'

Having a good marketing policy is even more important in times of recession, it has been revealed.

A new survey by the CMO Club has found that 71 per cent of chief marketing officer in the US do not plan to cut branding budgets, while 14 per cent said they would.

Search engine optimisation and public relations budgets are the least likely to face cuts.

Pete Krainik, CMO Club founder, said: "There is a school of thought that says marketing is more important than ever in a recession and our survey results show that a number of companies seem to be following that philosophy."

The giving of corporate gifts is one way to improve a company's public relations.

Some 1,200 chief marketing officers are members of the CMO club which questioned 100 members varying from start-up businesses to companies listed in the Fortune 1000 firms in advance of the You're Not Alone Anymore summit in New York.

Marketing expert Don Schultz has said that effective branding can add artificial value to a product which makes it more appealing to consumers.
