New guidelines in corporate gifts row
The Iowa Insurance Division has set out a list of guidelines describing what kind of corporate gifts insurers can give to their clients.
Promotional Products Association International reports that the new guidelines prevent corporate gifts worth more than $10 (£5.65) with a company logo on from being distributed by insurance professionals.
Chris Vernon, president of Iowa-based distributor The Vernon Company, said the new rules were better than the former complete ban.
However, he believed the monetary restrictions were too tight for those operating in the modern business world.
Mr Vernon likened corporate gifts to other advertising media such as TV, newspapers and direct mail.
"Since promotional products are traditionally distributed to fairly broad target audiences they cannot be considered an inducement to make a purchase," he commented.
Under previous guidelines, the giving of corporate gifts was seen as a form of unethical behaviour as they provided additional benefits to policyholders.
