People 'don't trust' traditional advertising

A survey carried out by Bridge Ratings has found that members of the public do not trust traditional forms of advertising to tell them the truth about a product.

In 1997 the University of Massachusetts found that advertising was given a rating of just 3.3 out of ten for trustworthiness among Americans.

By 2007, the Bridge Ratings survey discovered that this figure had fallen further to a 2.2 trustworthiness rating.

However, the survey showed that people rated the opinions of friends, family and acquaintances much more strongly, in 2007 giving them a trustworthiness rating of 8.6 per cent.

Writing on Marketing Blurb, Susan Gunelius remarked that advertisers need to turn away from overt forms of promotion and instead try to drum up a "buzz" around their products or services.

Some ways of creating word-of-mouth advertising could include the production of corporate gifts to give to potential or existing clients.

Social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace are also seen as good potential ways of generating word-of-mouth advertising.

A survey carried out for World Book Day found that blockbuster books often sell so well because of this kind of advertising, with books such as The Da Vinci Code, Captain Corelli's Mandolin and Birdsong all selling well because of it.
