Queen and Sarkozy exchange lavish gifts

French president Nicolas Sarkozy's state visit to the UK has seen the political ties between Britain and France strengthened – and that won't have been hurt by the exchange of lavish gifts between the French head of state and the Queen.

Most chief executives do not have the ability to hand down noble titles as a corporate gift, but the Queen has the power, and she made Mr Sarkozy an Honorary Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath.

Mr Sarkozy was also presented with framed commemorative British and French stamps, reflecting his interest in stamp collecting.

The president's glamorous wife, Carla Bruni, was given a miniature carriage clock in a leather case.

In turn, the Queen was presented with the book, "A Perfect Knowledge Of Horses", published in 1743 by Louis XV's inspector of horses, Jean de Saunier.

She was also presented with two crystal horse sculptures, while the Duke of Edinburgh was given a bronze hunting dog.
