Teenage carer awarded with specially-engraved trophy
A Sussex teenager has been recognised for her efforts as a carer for her disabled younger sister in the 2008 Arun youth community awards.
17-year-old Amber Ezzat of Bognor Regis regularly looks after her sister, who has Anglemans Syndrome, in spite of suffering from a serious bowel disorder herself.
I was quite overwhelmed to win. I thought I was just a nominee," she told the Bognor Regis Observer newspaper on being presented with an engraved glass trophy last week.
"After all the help I have had, I want to give something back. The nurses on the high dependency unit in the Southampton hospital have given me a lot of care and support. I just want to be like that," she added, expressing her desire to become a nurse.
The awards were arranged by Arun District Council and the Arun Youth Council, in association with Inspire Leisure.
"We hear a lot about youths who behave badly but the majority of them are not like that. They are more like those who are here and they are absolutely brilliant," said council chairman Graham Tyler.
