Traditional brands 'eroded' by bank moves

Becoming banks after many years of operating as building societies has led to branding disadvantages, it has been reported.

According to Marketing Week, building societies such as Nationwide are enjoying record growth as savers move their money into such institutions.

In the period from August 2006 to August 2007 building societies received £7.6 billion in deposits, compared to £17.7 billion in the past year.

Margo Swadley, director at branding consultancy Added Value, told the publication the new banks had struggled to maintain the "warmth and friendliness" that comes with being a mutual.

Branding expert Gerry Moira added that in the light of banks' losses, building societies have benefited from the ability to separate themselves from the failures of the other financial institutions.
