Ubiquitous peace logo reaches 50th birthday
The emblem of the campaign for nuclear disarmament is now 50 years old.
Created by Briton's Gerald Holtom, a designer and conscientious objector, the logo was originally created from the semaphore signs for the letters N and D surrounded by a circle for the earth for the "Ban the Bomb" movement.
A book has been published by American pacifist Ken Kolsbun tracking the development of the logo as it passed around the world.
The logo has been adopted by many different groups throughout the decades, from the campaign for nuclear disarmament to anti-Vietnam protests, to the civil rights movement.
It has featured on a wide range of branded merchandise including cars, posters, album covers, a stap and Lucky Strike cigarettes, reports the Canadian publication the Calgary Herald.
A clear and iconic logo can help to sell a product, according to LogoGuru.co.uk.
The website claims that logo design is "decisive" in the success of a business.
Logos can be printed onto corporate gifts such as pewter tankards and desk accessories.
