Branded Merchandise News

Unlicensed sellers 'not allowed to profit from Olympics logo'

Official sponsors of the Olympic Games in Beijing are doing all they can to prevent imitations from profiting from the organisation's logo, Reuters reports.

The Chinese government, Olympic representatives and Beijing organisers have been working to enforce legislation to restrict the issuing of unauthorised branded merchandise and business gifts, says the news agency.

In total, the 12 global sponsors of the games have made contributions totalling approximately $900 million (£450 million) and it has been estimated that local contracts will bring an extra $1 billion (£500 million) for Games organisers.

Prohibited activities include branding corporate gifts such as desk accessories or pewter tankards with the five-ring Olympic logo, and selling unofficial versions of the mascot, according to Reuters.

Rewards of up to 100,000 yuan (£7,370) are to be offered to Chinese citizens who report Olympic logo infringement cases.

Last year the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Industry and Commerce dealt with 95 such cases.
