'Unsung community heroes' given engraved awards in Bexley

The unselfish efforts of "the finest examples of what makes Bexley so good" have been recognised in the Bexley Civic Recognition Awards.

Bexley's mayor Nigel Betts presented the winners with engraved glass awards to celebrate their achievements.

Reg Bartlett received an outstanding achievement award for 40 years of voluntary work.

Among other things, the 83-year-old has been a scout leader, director of the local Samaritans and has presented a hospital radio programme for 18 years.

The Crogness Engines Trust won the second outstanding achievement award for its work restoring the original beam engines and their engine house at Crossness sewage treatment works.

Entries for the 2009 awards are being accepted now and the closing date is November 28th. Nominees are usually expected to have carried out some form of voluntary service for at least 20 years and have made a positive benefit to the community.
